At least 4 killed in Georgia shooting at high school
FBI alerted last year to Georgia school attack suspect
Four people were killed, and nine others were hospitalized following a mass shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, on Wednesday. The suspected gunman, identified as 14-year-old student Colt Gray, is in custody.
Victims
The four victims who lost their lives in the tragedy have been identified as:
- Mason Schermerhorn, 14-year-old student
- Christian Angulo, 14-year-old student
- Richard Aspinwall, math teacher and assistant football coach
- Christina Irimie, math teacher
Nine others, including eight students and one teacher, were wounded and are expected to survive.
Suspected Shooter
The alleged shooter, Colt Gray, is also a student at the school. He will be charged with murder and tried as an adult. Authorities revealed that Gray had been questioned by law enforcement last year after receiving anonymous tips about online threats related to a potential school shooting. However, there was insufficient evidence at that time to justify an arrest.
Timeline of the Shooting
According to student Lyela Sayarath, Gray left their Algebra 1 class around 9:45 a.m. and returned near the end of the period. He knocked on the door, but a fellow student noticed he was carrying a gun and refused to let him in. Gray then entered a neighboring classroom and began shooting.
The first reports of the shooting reached the sheriff’s department at approximately 10:20 a.m. Law enforcement, along with two school resource officers, quickly arrived on the scene. A resource officer confronted Gray, who surrendered without resistance.
Investigation
Authorities have determined that Gray used an AR-platform weapon in the attack. Earlier in the day, the school received a phone threat warning of shootings at five schools, with Apalachee High being the first target. However, investigators have found no evidence of additional schools being targeted or other shooters involved. Schools in the county will remain closed for the week as the investigation continues.
