Columbus Blue Jackets forward Johnny Gaudreau dies in New Jersey bike accident
Blue Jackets Left Wing Johnny Gaudreau, brother die in ‘unimaginable tragedy’ team confirms
Johnny Gaudreau, a forward for the Columbus Blue Jackets, tragically passed away Thursday night in a biking accident in Oldmans Township, New Jersey, alongside his brother Matthew. The incident occurred near their hometown of Salem in Salem County. The Blue Jackets confirmed the heartbreaking news in a statement released by the team.
Gaudreau, 31, was a pivotal player for the Blue Jackets, having joined the team as an unrestricted free agent from the Calgary Flames in July 2022. He was looking forward to a comeback season after two challenging years with Columbus. Recently, Gaudreau had represented the United States at the men’s world championships in Czechia, where he tallied three goals, eight assists, and 11 points in eight games.
This tragedy is another devastating blow to the Blue Jackets, who are still mourning the loss of goalie Matiss Kivlenieks, who died in a fireworks accident in July 2021. Gaudreau was set to be a groomsman in his sister Katie’s wedding on Friday and leaves behind his wife, Meredith, and their two young children, Noa and Johnny.
Gaudreau’s decision to join the Blue Jackets was motivated by his desire to be closer to home and raise his family there. Despite facing criticism for his move from Calgary, he remained dedicated to Columbus and was determined to bring success to the team. His untimely death leaves a profound void in the Blue Jackets’ lineup as they prepare for the new season.
