Paris 2024 Paralympics: China shines in powerlifting as Guo Lingling betters own world record
Day two of the Para Powerlifting competition at the La Chapelle Arena on 5 September promises to be a thrilling showcase of strength and determination, with four Paralympic champions set to be crowned. The action kicks off in the afternoon with two finals, followed by two more in the evening.
The Champions to Watch
The day will begin with the women’s up to 50kg final, where Great Britain’s Olivia Broome, the reigning world champion and Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist, is the favourite. Broome’s impressive record positions her as the top contender, though recent World Cup events have introduced emerging talents that could challenge her. China’s Jinping Xiao, who set a new Asian record with a 123 kg lift in Tbilisi, is one such contender. Although powerhouses like China’s Hu Dandan and Nigeria’s world record holder Esther Oyema (131kg) are absent, the competition remains fierce.
Following this, the men’s up to 59kg final will take center stage. China’s Qi Yongkai, the defending Paralympic and world champion, is expected to dominate. However, he faces stiff competition from El Salvador’s Herbert Aceituno, a Tokyo 2020 and Dubai 2023 Worlds medallist, and Iran’s Mohsen Bakhtiar, who has had a strong season. The world record for this category, set by Egypt’s Osman (211kg) at Rio 2016, still stands as the benchmark.
Evening Highlights
The evening session will feature the much-anticipated women’s up to 55kg final, a showdown between Ukraine’s Mariana Shevchuk and Egypt’s Rehab Ahmed. Shevchuk, the reigning Paralympic champion and Tbilisi 2021 Worlds gold medallist, will be looking to defend her title. Meanwhile, Ahmed, the current world champion and world record holder (135kg), enters the competition in top form, having also secured a silver medal at Tokyo 2020 in the -50kg category.
The final event of the day will be the men’s up to 65kg final. China’s Zou Yi, the reigning world champion and world record holder (222kg), is the favourite. However, Iran’s Amir Jafari Arangeh, the Tokyo 2020 silver medallist and Dubai 2023 World silver medallist, will be aiming to upgrade his silver to gold, making for an exciting conclusion to the day’s events.
Stay tuned for a day of intense competition and world-class performances as these athletes vie for Paralympic glory in Paris.
