Haunting Titanic Mirror newspaper article found in woman’s wardrobe
Newcastle move closer to signing Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi
A newspaper from right after the Haunting Titanic Mirror newspaper sank has been found in a wardrobe.
The April 20, 1912 edition of The Daily Mirror was discovered in a house in Lichfield, Staffordshire, 112 years later. The paper features a photo of two women waiting to see the list of survivors in Southampton.
The Titanic sank on April 14, 1912, after hitting an iceberg, and more than 1,500 people died.
Hansons Auctioneers, which found the newspaper, called it a “valuable piece of social history.” Charles Hanson, the owner, said, “We know a lot about the Titanic disaster from movies, TV shows, and books, but this find reminds us of the grieving families and loved ones left behind.”
The article beneath the photo described the “tragedy upon tragedy” in Southampton, where most of the crew lived. It talked about the heartbreak of mothers and wives who read the list of survivors only to find their fears confirmed.
The newspaper, which sold for £34 on Tuesday, includes a double-page spread with photos of some of the victims.
