Mariah Carey mother and sister die on the same day

Mariah Carey’s mother Patricia and her sister Alison both passed away on the same day this weekend. Mariah, who is 55 years old, shared her grief with PEOPLE.

Mariah said, “I’m heartbroken because I lost my mother this weekend. Tragically, my sister also died on the same day.”

Mariah and her mother had a complicated relationship. Patricia was a trained opera singer and vocal coach, and Mariah got her singing talent from her. Despite their ups and downs, they stayed connected and even performed together on TV in 2010.

Mariah honored her mother in her memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, saying she believed her mother did the best she could and that she would always love her.

Mariah’s relationship with her sister Alison was also difficult. In her memoir, Mariah mentioned it was safer for her not to stay in touch with Alison or her brother Morgan.

The causes of Patricia and Alison’s deaths are not known yet. Mariah has asked for privacy as she deals with this tough time.
