Sha’Carri breezes through opening round at her first Olympic race, wins 100 heat in 10.94 seconds

Sha’Carri Richardson won her first Olympic 100-meter race in 10.94 seconds on Friday, easily qualifying for the semifinals after a straightforward opening round.

Wearing neon green shoes, which differentiated well against the radiant purple track, the American caught the first of eight first-round races on the first day of the season of track activity at a jam-pressed Stade de France.

Richardson told NBC after the race, Sha’Carri dominates Olympic debut, Grant Fisher earns 10,000m bronze  “To be an athlete here, competing with the energy, with a great appreciation for track and field is a phenomenal feeling.” She did not make a pitstop to speak with print reporters.

All of the top competitors also made it through the first round, including Jamaican Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, who won the event twice and is competing in her fifth and final Olympic Games. Fraser-Pryce ran 10.92 however completed second to Marie-Josee Ta Lou-Smith of Ivory Coast, who won the day’s quickest heat in 10.87.

Melissa Jefferson and Twanisha Terry, Richardson’s American training partners, also made it.

Richardson, in contrast to her performance at the Olympic trials earlier this month, got off to a strong start, bursting out of the blocks and standing up quickly. She then kicked into overdrive, cruising into the finish, tapping her chest with her hands as she crossed the line.

She will compete in the semifinals on Saturday night, and if she succeeds there, she will attempt to win the gold medal a few hours later.

She completed a comeback that began shortly after winning Olympic trials in 2021, when she tested positive for marijuana and was disqualified from competing in Tokyo. Last year, she won the gold medal at the world championships.

Kerr and Ingebrigtsen advance The runners in the race that could be considered the greatest rivalry on the track remained on a collision course. Both the British Josh Kerr and the Norwegian Jakob Ingebrigtsen made it through their first heats of the 1,500.

They’ll race again Sunday, with the last planned for Tuesday.

Ukraine’s best high jumper takes on Yaroslava Mahuchikh, who holds the world record and is also the champion. She only jumped twice, clearing 1.95 meters on her second attempt, which was all she needed to easily advance to the final on Sunday night.

There were no major shocks. Eleanor Patterson of Australia, the world champion in 2022, and Vashti Cunningham of the United States both made it through with a score of 1.92 despite missing at 1.95 three times.
